The first time I saw her was at my Dad’s funeral. I know what you’re thinking – his dad dies of cancer and a few days later he’s eyeing up some girl. It wasn’t like that. Well. It was. But it’s not like I was on the pull or anything. And it wasn’t as if I could see much of her, either. She was wearing an enormous overcoat. Just a flash of blonde hair showing over the top. I didn’t notice her at first. I was sitting there, front row of the crematorium, between Mum and Chloe. I knew the place was packed – I’d turned round a few times and had a look. Lots of black clothes and pale faces. It was January – dead cold with ice on the roads so Mum was worried people wouldn’t turn up. But they did – masses of them. All Dad’s family. Friends. Even a couple of ex-girlfriends who made a big show of coming up to Mum, arms outstretched, trying to hug her. Mum was hating it. I could hear her teeth grinding. And she was gripping my arm tight with her fingers.

THE GIST: I think the blurb (First part of the post) was quite informative enough, in addition to the first chapter. This is the first part of a trilogy. The parts are, Six Steps to a Girl, Three's a Crowd, and The One And Only. The story starts with the protagonist, Luke, at his dad's funeral, instantly smitten with a girl. She's the most beautiful girl he's ever seen and he wants her...badly. But she's got a boyfriend. So a guy called Ryan, from his school, offers to help. Luke has always noticed how popular Ryan suddenly became with the ladies, so he (Ryan) tells him about the Six Steps to a Girl, which Luke, although hesitant, agrees to use.
RATING: I've given it a 4.5/5.
I actually enjoyed my time reading this since it had all the elements of being a good read. The book had it's funny AND suspenseful moments, which made it hard to put down.
The book follows the concept, "Just because there's a goalie, doesn't mean you can't score." This is what Ryan teaches Luke. And what also pulled me in even more, was the fact that Luke was a guy, which is rare in something considered quite girly. But trust me, this book is no where near being girly. Anyway, it shows how guys think when they're trying to get the girl of their dreams, even if it means using those Six Steps. Although it's a short, simple read, it also produces a strong impression on the reader.
