BR: Just Listen - Sarah Dessen

'I'm Annabel. I'm the girl who has it all. Model looks, confidence, a great social life. I'm one of those lucky ones. Aren't I? My 'best friend' is spreading rumours about me. My family is slowly falling apart. It's turning into a long, lonely summer, full of secrets and silence.

But I've met this guy who won't let me hide away. He's one of those intense types, obsessed with music. He's determined to make me listen. And he's determined to make me smile. But can he help me forget what happened the night everything changed?'

This is the first part of chapter one:

I taped the commercial back in April, before anything had happened, and promptly forgot about it. A few weeks ago, it had started running, and suddenly, I was everywhere. On the rows of screens hanging over the ellipticals at the gym. On the monitor they have at the post office that’s supposed to distract you from how long you’ve been waiting in line. And now here, on the TV in my room, as I sat at the edge of my bed, fingers clenched into my palms, trying to make myself get up and leave.“It’s that time of year again. . . .” I stared at myself on the screen as I was five months earlier, looking for any difference, some visible proof of what had happened to me. First, though, I was struck by the sheer oddness of seeing myself without benefit of a mirror or photograph. I had never gotten used to it, even after all this time.

THE GIST: Annabel, the main character, is a model, although, much to her mother's dismay, she'd like to quit this job. She's been through a lot of painful times and one night, Annabel's so called 'best friend', Sophie, sees something she got the wrong idea of... This makes Annabel lose all her friends and fall into depression as rumours spread. She's the type of girl that would reply, "I'm fine," When asked "How are you?" even if  she's struggling with a devastating experience. She starts telling lies to please everyone and she never thinks of what she wants, rather, what everyone else wants. When she meets music-obsessed Owen, he's willing to change that.

RATING:I give this book a 4/5 because the author tackles very serious problems in teenagers, including depression and anorexia, which makes it very believable. Also, I liked the fact that music has a role in this. It's not your typical chick-lit novel, but it's worth reading if you're looking for a more realistic story. This does include a comedic lines, romance, and serious problems. So overall I did enjoy it and found it quite good.
People who are mature enough (13+) are capable of reading this book, because it contains many serious problems (May be disturbing) and some profanity. (Which is prevalent nowadays.)

Hope you liked my review
